Father's Day

Father's Day is looming. Being me, if it isn't delivered we don't get it so I need to plan in advance.

Darling father is easy enough. He is having a joint teasmaid from all his children which he has had early and loves. It is really helping him be comfortable. A small miniature and glass from little bear will be great.

But what to get OH from little bear? I am absolutely stumped. He rarely drinks from a mug, and he has 'Dad' mugs. He has a 'Dad' glass, which he regularly uses. I don't want to get him clothing, as I believe it is OH's job to choose his own clothes and I refuse to get him socks.

He hasn't got any outstanding books he wants, he doesn't drink much and when he does it is darling father's whiskey. None of his hobbies actually require anything buying for him. There are only so many ornaments you can give a man.

Darn and Poot!

Pardon? Also dear heart is a hero

Little bear had to go for a hearing test this morning. So it was a full on no holds barred cage fighting get dressed, force breakfast in crumb by crumb, ration toys he is taking with us, and dive out of the house.

Of course little bear is as good as gold on the bus. Of course he is as good as gold at the bus stop. Then we had to change buses (two buses to get to the clinic). I left my bag on the bus.

So little bear and I were stranded at a bus stop in the rain with no ticket and no money. We did have a bag with a panda and a frog umbrella so we were not entirely without resources and a small frog bar was available to sustain little bear. And of course we had an appointment due. Fortunately I still had my mobile in my pocket, so I cuddled little bear, who was really well behaved apart from refusing to wear gloves, and rang - the bus company who 'put out a shout', and the clinic, who are sending another appt, and dear heart, who came from an hour away and rescued us. He was completely a hero and I was desperately grateful.

And the lovely driver not only kept my bag and gave it to me when the bus next came near my house, but also refused to take any money off me for a drink. I want to say that he was, I think, Polish and absolutely wonderful. All my experiences with the Polish have been good, but he was lovely. I could have hugged him! And he was really lovely to little bear who struggled to get on the bus without relinquishing his frog umbrella.

Also dear heart's boss was so good to let dear heart come, find me, watch little bear as I got my bag and then go back to work as dear heart must have been away nearly three hours and they are extremely busy.

Red Cross on the Door

Dear heart officially has swine flu and is not too bad, really.

btw it was initially a white cross on the door. The word quarantine comes from an Italian phrase for forty days. When the bubonic plague was a major problem there was a particular place (an island I think) at Venice where the ships from places at high risk had to stay for forty days, roughly the length of incubation time for the plague. In Medieval and Early Modern London there was not the plague hospitals and planning that Italy, the Low Countries and France had developed and without plague hospitals the sick had to be confined to their homes, with the cross on the door. Those guarding the sick were those too desperate to avoid being so near to plague victims, and were often threatened, beaten or killed as a family escaped from, or tried to, a death sentance of being shut up with a sick member of the household.

Little bear has been quiet, off colour, tired but refusing to nap, extremely green nosed and very hit and miss with his appetite. I suspect that dear heart may have actually caught it from little bear, but if you saw little bear hurtling round the room in his new boots, you would also not feel inclined to subject him to long waits with drs etc. He seems to be a lot better now anyway. Even I have not been able to get too hysterical about it. We have been extremely lucky with little bear.

A way with words

I overheard dear heart say the following to little bear.

"Do you remember the day I told you that you could play on the computer? No, neither can I, off there."

Dear heart

Dear heart is the delight of my life. He is so good to me. We have been married nearly twenty years, and have of course had ups and downs. I think it absolutely marvellous that he still wants to spend time with me.

He is working so hard at the moment, it is so busy. And he is fussing because I am poorly and depressed, which is so hard to deal with. I think men do struggle when their wives are depressed. Men do and there is not much another can do to help depression.

He has given up his night out tonight to make sure I am all right.

I am trying to think of something nice for him to come home to - in the area of culinary matters - and thinking of recipes that can be created that do not require too much movement. He will understand if I can't but I want it to be lovely for him.
